How to celebrate Ganesh Chaturthi

To celebrate Ganesh Chaturthi, start by choosing an eco-friendly Ganesh idol and setting up a decorated space with flowers and lights. Install the idol in a clean, prominent area. Perform daily puja with flowers, a diya, and Ganesh mantras, and sing devotional songs. Offer traditional sweets like modaks as prasad to family and guests. Host cultural events and consider community service. Share stories about Ganesh to enhance understanding. On the final day, immerse the idol in water with a festive procession of music and dance. Clean up by responsibly disposing of materials and tidying the space.

Ganesh Chaturthi is celebrated as the birth anniversary of Lord Ganesh. Performing the puja and aarti diligently on Ganesh Chaturthi ensures the blessings of Lord Ganesh and brings prosperity and happiness to the home. Here are simple and clear steps to celebrate it grandly:

Selection and Installation of Ganesh Idol

Select an idol that is appropriate for the size of your home. Remember that clay idols are environmentally friendly. Choose a pure and sacred place for installing the Ganesh idol. This could be your home temple or any clean and sacred spot in your house. Clean the place thoroughly and lay a clean cloth on it.

Decorating the Home and Puja Area

Decorate the puja area with colorful streamers and ribbons. You can also use vibrant flowers for decoration.

Procedure for Puja and Aarti

Pay special attention to the timing of the puja and aarti to ensure that the rituals are performed correctly and with full devotion. On Ganesh Chaturthi, the puja is ideally performed in the morning, and the aarti is done after the puja. However, you can adjust the timing according to your family’s convenience.

Timing and Method of Puja:

On Ganesh Chaturthi, the puja of Lord Ganesh is performed specifically in the morning. The morning time is considered the most auspicious.

Wake up early in the morning, bathe, and put on clean clothes. Then, begin the puja of Lord Ganesh.

  • Clean the Ganesh idol with pure water to sanctify it. Place rice (akshat) and flowers in front of the idol.
  • Fill a kalash (pot) with water and light a lamp around it.
  • Apply chandan (sandalwood) and kumkum (vermilion) on Ganesh Ji’s forehead.
  • Offer naivedya (prasad) such as modak and laddus to Ganesh Ji and perform an abhishek (ritual bathing).
  • Pray to Lord Ganesh for his blessings and grace.

Timing and Method of Aarti:

After the puja, perform Ganesh Ji's aarti. During the aarti, move the lamp in circles in front of the idol.

  • Light a lamp (aarti diya) using ghee or oil, as it is considered auspicious.
  • Place the aarti diya on a plate and prepare the Ganesh Ji’s aarti book or verses for singing.
  • Move the lamp in circles in front of the Ganesh idol while singing the aarti. The aarti is usually part of Ganesh Chalisa or Ganesh Ashtakshara Mantra.
  • During the aarti, the entire family should join their hands in prayer and seek Ganesh Ji’s blessings.
  • After the aarti, touch the light of the lamp to everyone to receive blessings and distribute the prasad (offering) among all present.

Social and Cultural Activities

  • Provide food, clothes, or other essentials to the underprivileged.
  • Organize dance and music programs. Seek help from folk artists.
  • Listen to or narrate the story of Ganesh Ji, which explains the significance of the puja and the qualities of Ganesh Ji.
  • Attend discourses on Ganesh Ji’s teachings by religious gurus.

Ganesh Visarjan

Devotees should offer their worship and seek his blessings over a span of 10 days, and then immerse the idol on Anant Chaturthi.

  • Choose a river, sea, or artificial water body for the immersion.
  • During the immersion, also dispose of the puja materials and flowers in the water.
  • Play drums and other musical instruments, sing, and dance during the immersion.
  • Clean the area after the immersion.

Environmental Considerations

  • Use eco-friendly Ganesh idols that are safe for the environment.
  • Properly dispose of waste after the puja and clean the house.
