The National Testing Agency (NTA) has made changes to the tie-breaking criteria for JEE Main 2025. Age and application number will no longer be used for tie-breaking. The change is for students taking the exam for admission to premier engineering institutes, and is aimed at making the ranking system more fair and standardized.

JEE Main 2025: Age and Application Number No Longer Important

In a significant update, the National Testing Agency (NTA) has revised the tie-breaking criteria for JEE Main 2025. This change will impact students appearing for the JEE Main exam, a crucial step for admission to top engineering institutes in India. As per the new rules, age and application number will no longer be used in determining ranks in case of a tie. This move is aimed at providing a fairer and more standardized ranking system.

New Tie-Breaking Criteria for JEE Main 2025

For JEE Main 2025, the tie-breaking criteria have been altered, focusing on academic performance rather than age or the application sequence. Here’s how the new tie-breaking system will work if two or more students score the same marks:

  1. Highest Marks in Mathematics: The student scoring higher in Mathematics will be ranked higher.
  2. Physics Marks: If the tie persists, the student with higher Physics marks will get preference.
  3. Chemistry Marks: In case the tie continues, the scores in Chemistry will be considered.
  4. Aggregate Marks Across All Subjects: If the tie still remains, the total marks obtained across all subjects will be taken into account.
  5. Fewer Incorrect Answers: As a final criterion, the student with fewer incorrect answers will be prioritized.

Why the Change?

According to officials, these changes align the JEE Main exam with a merit-based approach that focuses on subject scores rather than age or other non-academic factors. This updated system intends to create a more balanced evaluation method for students, reducing biases that may arise from age-based or application-based factors.

Impact on Students

With these changes, students can now focus solely on their performance in the exam without worrying about factors like age. This new tie-breaking system will apply to both online and offline formats of JEE Main 2025. For students aspiring to excel in engineering, this update promises a more equitable ranking process based purely on academic achievements.
