Jai Narain Vyas University, previously known as the University of Jodhpur, was established in 1962, incorporating four government colleges in Jodhpur:

MBM Engineering College, now comprising the Faculty of Engineering & Architecture with 11 departments.

Jaswant College, transformed into the Faculty of Commerce & Management Studies with 4 departments.

S.M.K. College, now home to the Faculty of Law and the campus of the Institute of Evening Studies, presently utilized for undergraduate teaching in the Faculty of Arts and housing a Coaching Centre for Weaker Sections.

K.N. College for Women, serving as a multi-faculty constituent college of the University.

The inauguration by Dr. S. Radhakrishnan, the President of India, on August 24th, 1962, marked the beginning of the University of Jodhpur. In his inaugural address, Dr. Radhakrishnan emphasized the university's purpose, envisioning its students as pioneers of the future rather than captives of the past, dedicated to advancing knowledge in both science and humanities with commitment and focus.

Initially, the University primarily served the educational needs of western Rajasthan (Marwar) and conducted research focused on the region's heritage, society, and challenges, being situated in the Thar Desert. As the westernmost University in India, it also engaged in research and education concerning border areas adjacent to Pakistan, aiming to provide education not only to residents of the desert and border districts but also to the children of Defense/Paramilitary personnel and other organizations operating in strategically significant sectors of the nation.

Today, Jai Narain Vyas University functions as a divisional university for the western region of Rajasthan.
