After recalling books over Godhra, govt reconstitutes library committee

Jaipur: School education department on Tuesday reconstituted its library book selection and purchase committee, days after recalling books from libraries in govt schools that had content related to the 2002 incident at Godhra in Gujarat.

Jaipur. The School Education Council has formed a Library Book Selection and Purchase Committee to select books for libraries in government schools across the state. Satish Gupta, the Special Officer to Education and Panchayati Raj Minister Madan Dilawar, has been appointed as a special member of this committee. Additionally, 13 other members have been included in the committee to assist in the selection of books for the upcoming 2024-25 academic session.

Role of the Committee

The committee’s primary role is to select suitable books for government school libraries that contribute to students' knowledge and intellectual growth. Through this initiative, students will have access to educational and informative books on various subjects, promoting their academic and intellectual development.

Controversial Book Selection and Past Issues

It is notable that in 2023, the previous committee selected certain books that sparked controversy. These included "Adrishya Log" by Harsh Mander and "Jeevan Ki Bahar" by Madhav Gadgil. These books allegedly glorified the accused in the Godhra incident, which led to dissatisfaction and unrest among different sections of society, stirring widespread criticism against the government.

New Guidelines and Precautions

To avoid similar controversies this time, the selection process has been advised to exercise greater caution. The Education Department has stated that the committee will select books that focus on students' academic needs and moral development, ensuring they foster a positive outlook along with education.

The formation of this committee aims to ensure that the library books chosen will focus solely on enhancing students’ academic knowledge and intellectual growth.
